Tool's inspiration on Tim Marr's art

All creatives relate on some fundamental level. Tim has felt connection with other artists throughout his creative journey, including a lot of music artists. He feels aligned with other creators that are putting authentic and mind expanding work out into the world. One big inspiration for him has been Tool. Their work is complex, layered and takes the listener on a journey within their mind and sensations. This aligns so well with Tim's approach to art.

Tool also honours visual artists, like their collaborations with artists for their album covers and tour merch, notably Alex Grey. The band members celebrate creatives and creative work. The artists they pick tend to have a high level of detail, psychedelic aspects and a focus on consciousness which overlap with Tim’s interests. There’s a shared focus on pattern, structure, and looking a bit deeper than what’s immediately visible.

Tim’s work often leans into psychedelic and alternative themes, exploring forms that feel both organic and constructed. In that sense, the world Tool creates, both musically and visually, sits comfortably alongside his own. It's an exploration of shared ground.

He’s not a musician himself but is always immersed in their tracks - how they layer rhythm, build tension, and shift between complexity and restraint, creating a sound that feels constantly evolving and deeply intentional.

For people who are familiar with both, the connection is easy to recognise. There’s a shared interest in creating work that gives you more the longer you sit with it.
